News-Gazette chronicles latest battle over exemption authority

The News-Gazette recently wrote about attempts to remove from the U of I and other institutions the ability to classify positions as academic professional. The article is accompanied by a photo taken at the October CAP meeting.

A state committee is considering a rule change that would transfer the authority to exempt positions from civil service to the State University Civil Service System (SUCCS). Supporters and opponents of the change are organizing ahead of the SUCCS Merit Board meeting in November.

The significance of the rule change? Any request to make a position academic professional will be met with a chilly reception, and if SUCCS’s past history is any indication, significant delays to even receive an answer.
